A tech pack is the blueprint of your garment: a document that tells the factory exactly what to make, in what measurements, with which materials and finishes. A complete denim tech pack prevents 90% of sampling mistakes — and an incomplete one causes them.
The eight sections of a complete denim tech pack
- Technical flat sketches: front and back, with construction details called out.
- Measurement chart: base size specs with tolerances, plus grading rules.
- Fabric specification: composition, weight (oz), stretch percentage, shade reference.
- Wash reference: photos or a physical sample of the target wash and finish.
- Trims list: zippers, buttons, rivets, thread colours, labels and patches.
- Stitching details: stitch types, SPI (stitches per inch), contrast thread callouts.
- Label placement: brand, size, care and origin label positions.
- Packing instructions: folding, polybag, hangtag and carton requirements.
No tech pack? Here is what good factories do
You do not need a finished tech pack to start a project. Experienced manufacturers build one with you: from a reference garment, sketches, or even a clear set of photos. Can I send a sample garment instead of a tech pack?
Yes. A reference garment plus notes on desired changes is often the fastest brief. The factory reverse-engineers the pattern and documents it into a tech pack for approval.
What measurement tolerances are normal for denim?
Industry standard is plus or minus 1 cm on waist and length, 0.5 cm on smaller points. Washes add shrinkage, which the pattern must compensate — one reason wash and pattern teams must work together.
Who owns the tech pack the factory develops?
Agree on this upfront. At ASF Moda, tech packs developed for your brand belong to your brand.
